Following the announcement of 'Hornets', we sat down with Omadhaun to ask some very important questions...
1. Tell us everything there is to know about your new EP, Hornets
This release encapsulates a huge portion of my journey as a producer. Some of the tracks are projects I’ve had open for years, while experimenting and developing my production skills. Some are new ideas that I dreamt up and executed really recently. However, they are all tied together by my prevailing stylistic threads, such as the combination of real instruments and synthesised sounds, and the use of a few particular melodic scales (which I don’t have the musical knowledge to name). I think the drum and bass angle has come from my prolonged exposure to Bristol, as well as from playing at Boomtown the last couple of years (shoutout to End of The Line).
I love to use creatures as inspiration, hence the EP’s theme. One of my favourite aspects of drum and bass is that it can feel like it triggers your ‘fight or flight’ response. This happens halfway through the title track, when the hornet’s nest is disturbed and the chase begins.
Through My Mind is built around the vocal mantra. My girlfriend and I sang it into a little plastic mic from some sort of karaoke game. The quality of the recordings was tricky to work with, but they were really psychedelic and vibey so I just leant into that as much as I could.
String Theory is the EP’s heaviest hitter. It's all about the contrast between the alluring violins and the visceral, disgusting bass sounds.
Vesuvius got its name because it feels to me like the soundtrack to a cataclysmic event. There’s a lot of story in this track which is shaped by anticipation followed by pure chaos and intense action.
The Culprate remix that rounds off the EP is a full circle moment for me, as it was my track Internal Locust that first caught his attention, ultimately leading to my entry into the scene. I’m honoured to feature him on this release, not to mention that the remix itself is next level.
2. What’s the most useful piece of equipment or software in your musical toolkit?
Minimeters changed the game for me by taking away so much of the guesswork. Shaperbox comes in close second - particularly VolumeShaper. Shoutout to the Korg Monotron Delay that I use on every track, too.
3. Where does the name Omadhaun come from?
Omadhaun is derived from the Irish Gaelic word amadán, meaning someone who is out of their senses, a fool. I got this from my late grandfather, who was Irish and used the term endearingly
with the family.
4. What’s your most played song this year?
Afterglow by Phaeleh and Soundmouse. It's my go-to whenever I need a moment of calm. Such a pretty and ethereal tune. It's also really soft on the ears, which is just the ticket in between working on the type of stuff on the Hornets EP!
5. What is something that you believe that other people think is insane?
Cheese and marmalade on toast is wonderful.
6. If you could merge multiple musicians/artists into one super musician/artist, whowould you choose?
Sade, Mid-Air Thief, C418 and Oneohtrix Point Never. Melodies from the dream realm!
Omadhaun 'Hornets' EP is released 18th March, 2026
